About
Hi, I'm Hyun-Min — an ML and systems engineer based in Zurich. Most of my work sits where model code meets the hardware it actually runs on.
The short version
I recently finished my M.Sc. at ETH Zurich and am now at Huawei Research Switzerland, working on kernels for Ascend NPUs. Before that I did my B.Sc. at ETH as well. I care about the unglamorous parts of making ML systems work: quantization, kernel writing, serving, the whole chain from paper to "it runs on the thing."
Outside of that I'm the kind of engineer who enjoys running their own infrastructure — small services on a Hetzner VPS, a home server for media, a couple of Discord-related side projects — and tinkering with whatever sounds fun that week.
Currently
- Day job: Huawei Research Switzerland — contributing to pto-kernels, Huawei's tile-based virtual ISA for Ascend NPUs.
- Side: a personal HexOS (TrueNAS Scale) homelab running Immich, Plex, Nextcloud, a Minecraft server, and Overleaf CE — all behind a Tailscale VPN with Nginx reverse-proxying the routes.
- Also: maintaining a fork of plex-discord-rpc, running a self-hosted health tracker, and poking at home automation.
- Reading: Chinese wuxia novels, Korean webnovels, and manhwa — plus the ongoing drip of LLM quantization and efficient-serving papers.
- Playing: Artisan of Glimmith, Arknights, and Arknights: Endfield.
- Rediscovering: the piano — turns out I enjoy it more than I expected.
Languages
English and German fluently, intermediate Korean, and beginner Japanese.
Outside of work
When I'm not at a laptop, you'll probably find me bouldering, at a musical, or tinkering with whatever sounds fun that week.
